Zero-Touch Infrastructure™: Hands-off Backup and Archive in Your Datacenter

We use the term Zero-Touch Infrastructure a lot to describe the ease of management our customers experience with our as-a-Service delivery. Often, this term is met with confusion: How can backup and archive really be “Zero-Touch”?

With Igneous, the day-to-day management of backup and archive is truly hands-off for customers. Don’t just take our word for it; read on to learn how Zero-Touch Infrastructure works and how it brings value to customers.

What is Zero-Touch Infrastructure?

Simply put, Zero-Touch Infrastructure means that, like public cloud, you don’t have to manage either software or equipment that runs that software. In the past, “managed services” involved people monitoring software and equipment at all times—but this was very expensive. Igneous accomplishes this through software that monitors Igneous appliances and systems in customer datacenters, bringing cloud principles to the datacenter.

How Does Zero-Touch Infrastructure Work?

The basic thing we’ve done is separate the control plane—i.e., how you monitor, troubleshoot, and update the software—from the data plane—i.e., where the data lives. This enables us to manage the software without ever seeing the data.

Our software monitors all aspects of the system at all times. If something goes wrong, it either remediates the issue or alerts our DevOps team. The key thing is that like with hyperscale providers, the software architecture is highly distributed and thus very tolerant to potential faults. For example, individual software containers or even hardware components can “fail in place” without interrupting data movement operations!

In addition, software updates are all non-disruptive. Because of our distributed architecture, we can update individual containers or even individual nodes in our storage layer without interrupting backup jobs! We update systems in the field every week in a way that’s completely transparent to our customers.

How Does Zero-Touch Infrastructure Benefit Customers?

Data is growing quickly both in cloud and on-premises; IDC predicts a CAGR of 33.9% in public cloud and 20% in non-cloud between 2016-2021. Unstructured file data is the largest growing segment, and businesses need data management solutions for massive unstructured data both in cloud and on-premises.

Zero-Touch Infrastructure enables businesses to harness the ease of management of cloud inside their datacenters. This results in business agility, reducing the time enterprise IT needs to spend on maintenance and troubleshooting and ultimately freeing up resources to devote towards business functions.
