Is Switching Backup Vendors Really Such a Hassle?

by Lily Bowdler – May 1, 2018

We’re a vendor. We get it. Even if a modern enterprise customer is a little bit miserable, trying to keep up with their backup SLAs, comply with industry regulations, and keep data available to end users, all while watching their budget spiral out of control, it’s a total hassle to go out and evaluate a bunch of backup vendors. Then, once you decide to move forward with a “more modern” option, you expect to go through the motions of managing a major project.

But Igneous is different.

We couldn’t consider ourselves “the team that solved the hard problem of file data management” if we left all of the nitty-gritty details of getting started to you and your team. Here’s how we make it easy to make the switch.

Switching from Your Backup Vendor to Igneous

First of all, starting out with Igneous doesn’t require you to rip out all of the secondary storage you already have. You simply point Igneous to your existing file systems via NFS or SMB, and we start moving data from your primary onto our system.

Since Igneous was built for massive scale, you don’t have to worry about how quickly your data grows from that moment forward. It’s all indexed and searchable.

Meanwhile, you get to keep using the infrastructure and software you already own, to the degree that it’s useful to you, for as long as you’d like, while your ever-growing business-critical data is guaranteed to be protected via Igneous.

When you become a customer, our team will install new hardware in your datacenter. As your level-0 backup starts, our team will begin to monitor your system’s progress remotely, ensuring efficiency (not to mention making your life easier).

Since the data movement is latency-aware, it doesn’t impact end users, nor other applications.  As such, you can get started rolling out Igneous side-by-side with your legacy data movement solutions, with essentially no interaction or risk of interruption.

Additionally, because the data movement is latency-aware, backups can run 24/7, keeping legacy and new systems “in sync” during a migration.

Key to this easy installation is the fact that we integrate directly with all major primary NAS vendors. Our data movement doesn’t rely on any special protocol access like NDMP, and it doesn't use any special APIs that do changed block tracking unless appropriate. So not only is Igneous quick (and hands-free) to install, it moves data incredibly fast.

Turning this around, Igneous’ proprietary data movement engine actually makes it easier to switch primary NAS vendors.

Because you’ll have a comprehensive, NAS-agnostic secondary tier, you’ll be able to follow in the footsteps of several of our customers, and use Igneous to migrate data from old to new. This is achieved by backing up legacy system data to Igneous with highly parallel data movement, and then restoring the data to your new primary tier using that same highly parallel data movement.

To sum up, Igneous is worth the switch. Not only are we the only good option for managing file data at scale, but our as-a-Service delivery, latency-aware data movement, and interoperability with your existing systems all come together to make the change itself as easy as the decision.
