Scale-Out Secondary Storage for Scale-Out NAS: How Igneous Integrates with Qumulo

by Andy Ferris – July 2, 2018

One of Igneous’ key benefits is how we integrate easily with any primary NAS system, streamlining secondary storage infrastructure and freeing customers from vendor-specific siloes on the secondary tier.

We are proud to support API integration with Qumulo File Fabric (QF2), so that organizations using Qumulo to store their unstructured data at scale can also protect their data in a modern and scalable way.

Why Use Igneous to Protect Your Qumulo?

Qumulo provides a modern, scale-out primary storage solution for unstructured data. But when it comes to protecting this data, tape and other legacy secondary storage solutions struggle to handle unstructured data at scale.

Igneous provides a scale-out secondary storage solution designed to handle the scale of Qumulo's modern scale-out file system. Igneous' data movement engine is optimized to dynamically scale out across the QC-Series nodes, evenly distributing the backup load without interrupting the applications utilizing QF2.

Qumulo-Workflow

Using Igneous to protect your Qumulo offers many advantages, including scale-out architecture, resiliency, and agility. The scale-out architecture of both Qumulo and Igneous allows enterprises to scale primary and secondary tiers together, which becomes essential as data grows large. The distributed nature of Igneous’ cloud-native architecture results in resiliency, protecting against potential failures. Lastly, users experience agility due to non-disruptive software updates.

API Integration with Qumulo

Igneous provides native integration for QF2 at an API level, simplifying the tasks of system discovery, snapshotting, and preservation of permissions on file system export.

Benefits of our native API integration include:

  • Automated user creation and permissions provisioning
  • Auto-discovery of exports
  • Read consistency

Setting up Igneous to protect files from Qumulo is incredibly simple; simply provide an IP address and login, and Igneous automatically creates a user with the appropriate permissions.

In addition, Igneous auto-discovers exports that need to be protected without any administrator effort. Data protection is as easy as setting a policy on the export.

Another benefit of using Igneous with your Qumulo system is that Igneous integrates with snapshots from Qumulo to ensure read consistency.

Coming Soon: A New Approach to Protecting Datasets

December 17, 2018

Unstructured data has grown at an annual compounded rate of 25% for the past ten years, and shows no sign of slowing. For most organizations, “data management” for unstructured data has really just meant capacity management, i.e. increase capacity to keep up with data growth. This model worked at moderate scales, but as datasets have increased in size, complexity, and quantity, it has pushed the scales into petabytes of data with billions of files, and overwhelmed budgets. Enterprises are now asking for data management strategies that do more than just provide continuously increasing capacity.
