How to Backup SMB Shares from Your NetApp NAS System

by Andy Ferris – March 26, 2018

Igneous Hybrid Storage Cloud makes it easy to protect all unstructured data residing on NetApp Cluster Mode. Enterprises with NFS exports, SMB shares, or both on NetApp systems can backup their NAS devices using Igneous in a single systems view through simple policies.

The policy-driven workflow allows organizations to choose how often they want to run backups, how long to retain data, and if the data should be replicated to a cloud location such as Microsoft Azure Blob Storage. Once a policy is created, it can be assigned to individual exports or entire systems. Igneous Hybrid Storage Cloud will take care of the rest.

How to Backup SMB Shares on NetApp

To begin protecting your SMB shares on a new NetApp Cluster Mode system, import your system. Igneous will automatically discover both NFS exports and SMB shares.

Once your system is imported, you can assign policies to your exports or shares, and Igneous will begin protecting your data.

To backup SMB shares on a NetApp Cluster Mode system that has already been imported to Igneous, simply re-scan the system and Igneous will automatically discover the SMB shares.

Once the SMB shares are discovered, you can add policies and protect both NFS and SMB data together. Any existing backup data or backup history will be preserved by Igneous Hybrid Storage Cloud.

Igneous Hybrid Storage Cloud will restore SMB shares using the same restore workflow used for NFS exports. Once you have found the share, directory, or file through the Activity Page or search, initiate a restore to the original location or any SMB share that has been imported into Igneous. Igneous will maintain the original permissions on the restored file, enabling organizations to maintain data security throughout the process.

Is Switching Backup Vendors Really Such a Hassle?

May 1, 2018

We’re a vendor. We get it. Even if a modern enterprise customer is a little bit miserable, trying to keep up with their backup SLAs, comply with industry regulations, and keep data available to end users, all while watching their budget spiral out of control, it’s a total hassle to go out and evaluate a bunch of backup vendors. Then, once you decide to move forward with a “more modern” option, you expect to go through the motions of managing a major project.
